NEW SERIES: In Conversation

I have a friend, an aspiring musician,
whose sister said to her one day, quite reasonably,
“What happens if you never get anything out of this?
What happens if you pursue your passion forever, but success never comes?
How will you feel then, having wasted your entire life for nothing?”
My friend, with equal reason, replied,
“If you can’t see what I’m already getting out of this,
then I’ll never be able to explain it to you.”
When it’s for love, you will always do it anyhow.’

[BIG MAGIC, Elizabeth Gilbert]
We recently sat down to read “Big Magic” by the inspiring Elizabeth Gilbert and while it’s a genuinely encouraging and uplifting book, this particular excerpt stuck with us and sparked the idea for this new blog section:
Working as designers, artists or makers in general, we often find ourselves in the situation of having to explain what it is we actually do all day and how we could possibly hope to one day make a good living out of it.
And while we generally take pride in what we do and are content with it, it can be hard sometimes, to not let such questions get to you or make you feel slightly uneasy.
To examine this debate we’ve reached out to fellow artists: Since the creative field leaves room for countless professions – in music, design, writing, painting, dance and performance, film or photography – we’ve talked to all kinds of different people. People we’ve worked and are friends with, to share their experiences and answer questions, such as:
Where do you draw inspiration from?
How do you structure your (work-) days?
Have you always know you were meant to do whatever it is you’re doing now?
Do you find it difficult to call yourself an artist? And how do you define that word?
How do you cope with moments of doubt and is there always a Plan B?
What piece of advice would you share with another aspiring artist?

With this new blog topic we hope to give a little insight on the perks and struggles that come along with the professions we’ve chosen, as well as bring likeminded people together and offer a platform for support, inspiration and encouraging words.
So, stay tuned for the first part of our new section!
Also, if you're an aspiring artist as well or feel like contributing something on this topic, feel free to send us an eMail as we always love to hear from you. :)
