POEM: Hands

HANDS -

He told me to always look at a man's hands,
For they have to tell you so much more about him then
His eyes or abs ever could.

- Hands, aren't they a curious thing?

They are a book to our souls, if you know how to read the pages,
Which bear a person's whole life within them, carefully hidden between the lines.

If you only dare to take a closer look,
The tiny scratches on the back of one's hands will tell you of all the times they lost grip and fell
Down, crashing to the ground.
  - But don't shut your eyes just then,
For if you turn those hands to reveal their plams to you, a soft spot behind all the
   Roughness on the surface,
You'll discover fine lines of almost healed scars as well.
Raw marks on pink skin.
But of a different kind.
Those are the cuts it took them each time to get back up again.

They are a secret street map, guiding you through all the places they've travelled across,
Permitting you entry to the worlds left unknown, they are still longing to explore.
Following the winding track of river-flowing curves leading to the sweet whispered promise of the
Touch of your skin.

They will tell you, wether he's gentle by the mere way of how he holds his cup of coffee
Or reaveal his strong and stubborn grip by pushing open a door for you
Even when the sign says 'Pull'.

There is no other part of the human body that can encase utter violence and graceful
  softness at the same time.

- Hands. How ordinary they've come to seem to us, while they are busy keeping our
Touch to the earth and everything around us intact. Acting as a silent messenger, bearing thoughts
And feelings and stories and lives along their touches of bare skin.
You can even hear them whisper when our fingers intertwine.

They are capable of holding a whole life inside of them.
A safe and sound nest between plams and an entwined fence of fingertips,
Trapping your secrets and longings, your fears and your joys and your hopes within.

- I look at your hands, gently folded across the table with your life shyly lurking at me
    From underneath, and hope someday
They will close themselves around mine.

NEW SERIES: In Conversation

I have a friend, an aspiring musician,
whose sister said to her one day, quite reasonably,
“What happens if you never get anything out of this?
What happens if you pursue your passion forever, but success never comes?
How will you feel then, having wasted your entire life for nothing?”
My friend, with equal reason, replied,
“If you can’t see what I’m already getting out of this,
then I’ll never be able to explain it to you.”
When it’s for love, you will always do it anyhow.’

[BIG MAGIC, Elizabeth Gilbert]
We recently sat down to read “Big Magic” by the inspiring Elizabeth Gilbert and while it’s a genuinely encouraging and uplifting book, this particular excerpt stuck with us and sparked the idea for this new blog section:
Working as designers, artists or makers in general, we often find ourselves in the situation of having to explain what it is we actually do all day and how we could possibly hope to one day make a good living out of it.
And while we generally take pride in what we do and are content with it, it can be hard sometimes, to not let such questions get to you or make you feel slightly uneasy.
To examine this debate we’ve reached out to fellow artists: Since the creative field leaves room for countless professions – in music, design, writing, painting, dance and performance, film or photography – we’ve talked to all kinds of different people. People we’ve worked and are friends with, to share their experiences and answer questions, such as:
Where do you draw inspiration from?
How do you structure your (work-) days?
Have you always know you were meant to do whatever it is you’re doing now?
Do you find it difficult to call yourself an artist? And how do you define that word?
How do you cope with moments of doubt and is there always a Plan B?
What piece of advice would you share with another aspiring artist?

With this new blog topic we hope to give a little insight on the perks and struggles that come along with the professions we’ve chosen, as well as bring likeminded people together and offer a platform for support, inspiration and encouraging words.
So, stay tuned for the first part of our new section!
Also, if you're an aspiring artist as well or feel like contributing something on this topic, feel free to send us an eMail as we always love to hear from you. :)
Xo.
